Historic Centre of Almacelles Monument · Almacelles, Segrià, Lleida The historic core of Almacelles (Segrià, Lleida) is an ensemble declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) corresponding to Mayor and de la Mercè streets. After being razed in the War of the Reapers (Guerra dels Segadors), Melcior de Guàrdia, a Barcelona native, obtained the jurisdiction of the municipality from Charles III in 1773 and commissioned the architect Josep Mas i Dordal to design a new town, the first orthogonal grid ever planned in Catalonia, with eight blocks and forty houses around a central street eleven metres wide. A year and a half after the first stone was laid, twenty houses had already been built on Carrer de la Mercè, with simple, symmetrical neoclassical façades, a large segmental-arch doorway on the ground floor, wrought-iron balconies and small windows above.
