What to see and do in Alpicat

Alpicat
Village
Alpicat is a municipality in the Lleida market-garden area, in the Segrià, with 6,515 inhabitants, known for one of the liveliest Festes Majors in the comarca. Under Saracen rule until 1147, it then passed to the county of Urgell, which granted it a settlement charter in 1174; to distinguish it from a settlement of the same name near the capital, it took the name Villanueva de Alpicat, which it kept until 1948. It was depopulated after the war dels Segadors and again after the War of the Spanish Succession, and the Nueva Planta Decrees allowed it to become an independent municipality. Its economy is based on fruit-tree and cereal farming. The village preserves the church of Saint Bartholomew, built in the 16th century, with a baroque façade and neoclassical interior.
