What to see and do in Granyanella

Granyanella
Village
Granyanella is a small municipality in the comarca of la Segarra, in the province of Lleida, with its capital at la Curullada, and with various castles and the Torre Saportella. Within its territory also lies Tordera, or Tordera de Segarra, a village inhabited year-round by very few people. Among its heritage, the churches of Sant Jaume de la Móra, in the territory, and of Sant Pau de Tordera and Sant Pere de la Curullada stand out, the latter two next to the hamlets that give them their names.
Castle of Granyanella
Monument
The castle of Granyanella once stood on top of the village hill, built around the 11th century, like others in the comarca, to defend the route along the Ondara river against Saracen raids during the Reconquest; the place, originally part of the district of Cervera, became independent in that century. Its first lords were the Cervera family, who in 1230 granted the inhabitants franchises exempting them from several seigneurial dues; in 1283 the castle was sold to the abbot of Poblet, lord until the abolition of lordships in the 19th century. Almost nothing remains of the building: on the hill, today covered with vegetation and holding the village's water tank, only a 6 by 4 metre section of wall survives, of quadrangular ashlar, which could date from the 13th century. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Castle of la Curullada
Monument
White stone fortified house of the Segarra atop a hill overlooking la Curullada, in Granyanella, above the Ondara river, next to the crossroads that gave rise to the place name 'sa Cruïllada'. It was built in the mid-11th century, in the hands of the Cervera family; before 1340 it passed to Maimó d'Oluja and then to the priory of Sant Pere dels Arquells, which sold it in 1376 to Jaume Desvalls. In 1534 the heiress Isabel d'Alentorn i Desvalls married Bernat de Saportella; their descendants kept it until in the 17th century it passed to the Vilallonga family through the marriage of Francesc de Vilallonga i de Xetmar, lord of Estaràs, a family that still held it in the 19th century. Rectangular in plan, it preserves a three-storey tower with battlements from a 21st-century restoration, and the remains of a machicolation. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Castle of Fonolleres
Monument
The castell de Fonolleres stands at the highest point of the settlement of Fonolleres, in the municipality of Granyanella (Segarra), beside the old royal road from Lleida to Barcelona. It was built in the late 11th or early 12th century to secure that route; the first record is from 1113, when the lordship belonged to the Cervera family, from which the Fonolleres lineage arose. It passed afterwards to the Satorre family, between the 13th and 15th centuries, to the Ivorra family and, in the 17th, to the Pocurull family. It preserves a ground floor with an inner courtyard - possibly a former courtyard of arms -, two upper floors of irregular ashlar and a quadrangular tower with remains of a machicolation; the doorway was rebuilt in 1903. Today it is a privately owned farmhouse, not open to visitors, and a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Saportella Tower
Monument
The tower of Saportella, also called Molí de la Torre, is a large fortified manor house of Granyanella, in the Segarra, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It stands on the right bank of the Ondara river and was originally, in the 14th century, a mill, of which only part of the tower survives, with defensive arrow slits. Square in plan and three storeys high, the entrance door, with a voussoired round arch, bears the coat of arms of the Vilallonga family. It was the head of an autonomous division of the district of the castle of la Curullada, whose first known lords, the Saportella family, gave it its name. In the 17th century, Clemencia de Saportella married Francisco de Vilallonga, lord of Estaràs; in 1708 her heir was named count of Vilallonga de Saportella by Archduke Charles of Austria.
