Castle of Granyanella Monument · Granyanella, Segarra, Lleida The castle of Granyanella once stood on top of the village hill, built around the 11th century, like others in the comarca, to defend the route along the Ondara river against Saracen raids during the Reconquest; the place, originally part of the district of Cervera, became independent in that century. Its first lords were the Cervera family, who in 1230 granted the inhabitants franchises exempting them from several seigneurial dues; in 1283 the castle was sold to the abbot of Poblet, lord until the abolition of lordships in the 19th century. Almost nothing remains of the building: on the hill, today covered with vegetation and holding the village's water tank, only a 6 by 4 metre section of wall survives, of quadrangular ashlar, which could date from the 13th century.
