Castle of Fonolleres Monument · Granyanella, Segarra, Lleida The castell de Fonolleres stands at the highest point of the settlement of Fonolleres, in the municipality of Granyanella (Segarra), beside the old royal road from Lleida to Barcelona. It was built in the late 11th or early 12th century to secure that route; the first record is from 1113, when the lordship belonged to the Cervera family, from which the Fonolleres lineage arose. It passed afterwards to the Satorre family, between the 13th and 15th centuries, to the Ivorra family and, in the 17th, to the Pocurull family. It preserves a ground floor with an inner courtyard - possibly a former courtyard of arms -, two upper floors of irregular ashlar and a quadrangular tower with remains of a machicolation; the doorway was rebuilt in 1903. Today it is a privately owned farmhouse, not open to visitors, and a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
