What to see and do in les Oluges

Les Oluges
Village
Les Oluges is a municipality in la Segarra, in the province of Lleida, with 167 inhabitants (INE 2025), located in the upper valley of the river Sió, northeast of Cervera, and made up of the homonymous settlement and those of Montfalcó Murallat and Santa Fe. The village is crowned by the castle of Oluja, from the 11th century, which formed part of the March of Berga within the County of Cerdanya, and whose lords, the Oluja family, kept its dominion until in 1433 the town passed under the rule of Cervera. Rain-fed crops, barley and wheat, together with olive and almond trees and a vineyard important before phylloxera, have sustained its economy, supplemented by livestock farming and poultry raising. The walled precinct of Montfalcó Murallat, with the church of Sant Pere, is one of the most notable in the comarca.
Castle of l'Oluja Baixa
Monument
The castell de l'Oluja Baixa, a 16th-century castle-palace situated on the Plaça Major of les Oluges, preserves medieval structures beneath its Renaissance renovation and is divided into a defensive tower and a residential wing. The main doorway, a round arch with large voussoirs, bears the coat of arms of the sponsoring family; the tower, square and four storeys high, preserves the remains of an old machicolation. The settlement, documented since the 11th century (1072) as Oluja Jussana, was under the overlordship of the counts of Cerdanya, to whom Guerau Ponç swore an oath of fidelity. In the 14th-century hearth tax records (fogatges) it already appears divided into Oluja Sobirana and Oluja Jussana. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Tower of defensa de les Oluges
Monument
The Les Oluges defence tower is linked to the old castle of Oluja, which crowned the village and which in the 11th century was part of the March of Berga, within the county of Cerdanya. In the 14th century, the castle's lords were members of the Oluja family. In 1433 it became part of the veinat of Cervera.
Enclosure of Montfalcó Murallat
Monument
A medieval walled enclosure on a hill above the confluence of the Sió river and the Vergós stream, in the settlement of Montfalcó Murallat, municipality of les Oluges. It is an outstanding example of a vila closa (walled village) that preserves in good condition its perimeter wall, over eight metres high, against which the village houses were built on the inside; it is entered through a gateway with a double door of voussoir arches. Inside, a central square with a cistern and main street lead into narrow dead-end alleys. The castle that gave rise to the village, probably built around the 11th century when the count of Berga repopulated the Sió area, is documented from 1043 and belonged to various noble lineages until, over time, it lost its defensive role and was reduced to housing.
Manor House of Santa Fe
Monument
Former 12th-13th-century castle of Santa Fe, listed as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category) under the name Casa Senyorial de Santa Fe; it barely preserves original remains due to the transformations undergone by the settlement, possibly contemporary with the 12th-century wall and modified in the 18th century. The place is documented since 1025 in the county of Berga; today it is divided among several dwellings.
