What to see and do in Torregrossa

Torregrossa
Village
Torregrossa is a town in the south of the Pla d'Urgell comarca, in the province of Lleida, set on a plain at 232 metres among cereal fields and fruit trees partly irrigated by the Urgell canal. It has 2,248 inhabitants. Its origins go back to Roman times, as shown by remains found at Pou Bo, and in 1810 it was the scene of the Battle of Margalef, in which the Spanish army was defeated while trying to relieve Lleida, besieged by the French. It preserves the parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, with a Renaissance façade and a mid-19th-century belfry, the votive chapel of San Roque, from the 18th century, and the remains of the old castle, of which only the tower and the gateway survive.
Remains of the Castle of Torregrossa
Monument
The visible remains of the castell de Torregrossa, in the Pla d'Urgell, are located on the Carrer Major, at 229 metres of altitude, and are protected as an asset of cultural interest. What survives today, a tower with an access gateway, corresponds to the 16th-century reconstruction commissioned by the Montsuar-Avinyó lineage; the doorway opens with a round arch of large voussoirs with the family coat of arms on the keystone, and the upper floor preserves three aligned windows. Some houses neighbouring the church square retain remains of what may have been the old defensive precinct. After the Montsuar-Avinyó, the castle passed to the Rocabertí around 1626 and later to the Pignatelli of Belmonte until the end of the Ancien Régime.

Torregrossa Winter Main Festival
Activity
Torregrossa's Festa Major d'Hivern is held in a town whose castle is documented in 1172 as a frontier bastion facing Siurana, and in whose fields of Margalef French troops defeated, in April 1810, the column of general O'Donnell that was attempting to relieve Lleida.
Hermitage of Torregrossa
Monument
Ermita (hermitage) of Sant Roc, in the municipality of Torregrossa (Pla d'Urgell, Lleida), a town whose castle is documented in 1172 as a border stronghold facing Siurana. The first references to the hermitage date from 1541, when it was a small temple located outside the castle walls; it was rebuilt in 1748, the year its feast day was fixed on 29 December, and again in 1929 and in 1991, this last renovation directed by the parish priest Josep Coll i Soler. In the fields of Margalef, within the same municipality, French troops defeated General O'Donnell's column in 1810.
