What to see and do in Juneda

Juneda
Village
Juneda is a town in the comarca of Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, between the landscape irrigated by the Canal d'Urgell and the natural area of l'Aranyó i Miravall; it is crossed from east to west by the riu Femosa, near whose fertile lands prehistoric settlements have been found. Its name, of Arabic origin, gave rise to a walled medieval settlement, the Vila Closa, with narrow streets surrounding the calvary hill, also called La Costa; from its enclosure the Portal de Lamarca survives, from the 14th century, the old access route towards Arbeca, where the Dukes of Cardona, lords of the town, had their castle. With about 3,450 inhabitants, it also preserves an ice well from the late 15th or early 16th century with a capacity of 300 m³, and its church of the Transfiguration was begun in 1740 and consecrated in 1748.
Castle of Vinferri
Monument
The Castell de Vinferri was the centre of a rural cuadra documented since 1162, in a place overlooking the valley of the Femosa, where before the hermitage of Sant Jordi was built -of which only remains survive today- a fortified structure seems to have existed. Of the whole complex barely a small fragmented wall of ashlars survives, of irregular proportions, about four metres along its longest side, and a stretch of rammed earth wall much eroded by the passage of time.
Juneda Main Festival
Activity
The festa major of Juneda, in Garrigues (Lleida), is celebrated on the last weekend of August. Among its events, the Trofeu ciclista Vila de Juneda stands out, a cycling race held on the Monday of the festa major.
Virgin olive oil of les Garrigues
Curiosity
Protected Designation of Origin for olive oil from Les Garrigues, made with the arbequina variety, introduced to the comarca in the 18th century by the Duke of Medinaceli from Palestine and regarded as one of the best in the world for its consistency and quality. The oil is noted for its low acidity and its gastronomic qualities, suitable both for raw consumption and for frying and stews. The comarca, one of the leading olive-growing areas of Catalonia, has an oil route that allows visits to its cooperatives and mills.
Ice well of Juneda
Historical milestone
The Juneda ice well, included in Catalonia's Inventory of Architectural Heritage, lies beneath Tres Creus square in Juneda (Garrigues), enclosed by the square's retaining wall. It is a solid structure built of irregular ashlar stone with mortar, cylindrical in shape and topped by a conical cap, with a base about 8 metres in diameter and similar height; it was entered through a small opening on the east side, and part of the wall of the old town wall is preserved beside it. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries to compact winter snow and sell it in summer for medicinal purposes, it fell out of use and became a dump until it was restored in 1982; during the Civil War three openings were cut into it so it could be used as an air-raid shelter.
Mill of Baix de Juneda
Historical milestone
The Molí de la Vila, also known as the Molí de Baix, is a mill in Juneda protected as a local cultural heritage asset, which from 1872 harnessed the hydraulic power of water to grind grain, distil spirits and press olives, and which was an example of the pre-industrial industry that sustained the comarca's economy well into the 20th century. Its origins go back to the 17th century, with one element dated to 1688, though the building preserved today may as a whole date from the 19th century. In 1937 part of the structure collapsed and was rebuilt in 1961, and in recent times it has undergone some consolidation work.
Cassoles de Tros Contest
Food and drink
Since 1979 Juneda has held a competition of cassola de tros, the stew that day labourers cooked in the fields putting in common what each one brought. It is prepared in the open air with vine-shoot firewood and an earthenware pot.
