What to see and do in Fondarella

Fondarella
Village
Fondarella is a municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca, in the province of Lleida, with the parish church of Santa Maria, a former convent and the hermitage of Sant Sebastià. Its name comes from the Arabic word funduq, meaning inn or storehouse, and until modern times it was known as Alfondarella. The old quarter is arranged around the church of Santa Maria, of Romanesque origin and remodelled in the 15th century, with a voussoired doorway and a three-opening wall belfry; nearby stands the old manor house of the village's lords, now in private use. With barely 5.4 km², it is the smallest municipality in the Pla d'Urgell; the Urgell canal brought irrigation to most of its territory, where wheat, maize and alfalfa now predominate. It has 823 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Parish Church of Santa Maria de Fondarella
Monument
Former 15th-century convent converted into the parish church of Fondarella, included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It is a simple, single-nave church that closes off a row of village houses; of Romanesque origin, it was remodelled in the 15th century, with a voussoired doorway and a three-opening wall belfry, in a style reminiscent of Sant Martí dels Alamús. Of the original church only the façade remains, topped with a bell-gable acting as a Gothic buttress; the interior, small in size and with three naves, has the central one covered by a depressed barrel vault with reinforcing arches, and closes with a semicircular apse. In the 18th century the vault was repaired (1774) and, later, the roof, the sacristy and the choir (1816).
