What to see and do in Bellvís

Bellvís
Village
Bellvís is a town in the Pla d'Urgell, in Lleida, situated at 207 metres of altitude on the border with the Segrià and the Noguera, a comarca to which it belonged until 1988, and it includes the hamlets of dels Arcs and les Tarroges. Its name comes from the Latin bellu visu, 'beautiful view', and its coat of arms, with a bunch of grenache grapes, recalls that before the Urgell canal was built it was a dry-farming village devoted chiefly to the vine. With 2,249 inhabitants, it now lives off irrigated crops such as alfalfa, maize and dessert fruit. The village preserves the parish church of the Mare de Déu de l'Assumpció, from 1848, the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de les Sogues and the old Carrilet railway station.
Shrine of la Mare de Déu de les Sogues
Monument
Sanctuary situated on the Tossal de les Sogues, in the municipal term of Bellvís (Pla d'Urgell), where the chapel of the Miracle stands, small in size and rectangular in plan, with a three-arch porch and parts that preserve exposed 16th-century stonework. According to legend, the Virgin appeared in 1190 to Joan Amorós to ask that a sanctuary be built for her, hence the name Miracle; the first chapel was built in 1528 and in 1584 it passed to the Trinitarian friars, who in 1585 built the adjoining convent of les Sogues. Badly damaged in the Peninsular War and the Civil War, it was rebuilt in 1816 and restored in 1968. From 1977 the Tossal was excavated, and in 1982-1983 the Casal de la Mare de Déu was built there, shaped like a ship, the work of the architect Jordi Mir i Valls.
Church of Nostra Senyora de l'Assumpció de Bellvís
Monument
Parish church of Bellvís, in the Pla d'Urgell (Lleida), built in neoclassical style over the course of the 19th century on the site of an earlier church dedicated to Sant Pere, which fell into ruin in the 18th century. Work began in 1804, was interrupted by the Peninsular War, and resumed in 1814 and 1844; the façade, with columns, mouldings and a central oculus, was finished in 1848. It has a three-nave plan, with a side tower on a square base with rounded corners, built with Arbeca stone and with ashlars reused from the old church. It houses the image of the Virgin of the Soques, venerated in a camarín until 1936, and has been declared an Asset of Local Cultural Interest since 2001.

Irrigated landscape of the Canal d'Urgell
Nature
An irrigated agricultural landscape created by the Canal d'Urgell on the plain of the Pla d'Urgell, around Bellvís. The canal was built between 1847 and 1861 and was inaugurated in March 1862, when the Tarassó estate was irrigated for the first time. It rises in the river Segre, downstream from Ponts, and ends in the same river in the municipality of Montoliu de Lleida, after running 144.2 kilometres and crossing the comarques of l'Urgell, the Pla d'Urgell, la Noguera, the Segrià and les Garrigues. It irrigates about 70,000 hectares spread across nearly 49,500 farms, and its most notable work is the Montclar tunnel, almost 4,917 metres long in a straight line, built by about 6,000 workers.
