El Poal
Village
El Poal is a municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca, in the province of Lleida, split off from Bellvís on 8 May 1922, with 649 inhabitants at 216 metres of altitude; before the comarca was created it belonged to the Noguera. Situated about seven kilometres north of Mollerussa, on the fertile plain irrigated by the Canal d'Urgell, its economy is based on irrigated crops and livestock farming. It preserves the 18th-century parish church and the castle, a noble 17th-century building erected in 1763 at the initiative of the Desvalls, marquesses of El Poal. Antoni Desvalls i de Vergós, commander of the Sometents of Catalonia, was born in El Poal in 1666, and the musician Jaume Sisa composed his song Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol (1975) there while working picking fruit.
