What to see and do in el Palau d'Anglesola

El Palau d'Anglesola
Village
El Palau d'Anglesola is a municipality in the Pla d'Urgell with the baroque church of Sant Joan Baptista and a former Templar and Hospitaller palace; it has 2,232 inhabitants (INE 2025) and its roots go back to an Arab palau or almunia occupied in the 11th century by Ramon Gombau d'Anglesola during the comital conquest. At the end of the 14th century it briefly belonged to Enrique de Trastámara, future king of Castile, before passing to the Hospitaller order of Sant Joan de Jerusalem, which in 1405 formed with it and Sidamon the Hospitaller commandery of l'Espluga Calba. The palace-castle was remodelled in the 17th century. The church of Sant Joan Baptista, baroque transitioning to neoclassical, was built between 1798-1805, and the modernist Cooperativa del Camp, by Cèsar Martinell, was built between 1920-1923.
Church of Sant Joan Baptista del Palau d'Anglesola
Monument
Baroque church transitioning to neoclassical, built between 1798 and 1805. The municipality took its name from a former palace-castle remodelled in the 17th century, and its first Templar commander, Ramon Barrufell, was a landowner of Palau d'Anglesola. The first record of a church on the site dates from 1118, and around 1798 it was decided to build the present one, which was to be finished within five years; under the agreement, the top of the façade was to be identical to that of the church of Ivars d'Urgell, although in the end it was not. It has three naves with continuous side chapels and preserves a stone baptismal font decorated with two angels holding a heraldic emblem. The roof currently shows significant cracks caused by rising damp.
Former Templar and Hospitaller Palace
Monument
Former palace-castle that gives its name to the municipality of el Palau d'Anglesola. Its origins appear to lie in an Arab palace or almunia which, during the conquest of the territory by the counts of Barcelona in the second half of the 11th century, was occupied by Ramon Gombau d'Anglesola in 1084. In 1405 the Avignon pope Benedict XIII created, together with this town, l'Espluga Calba and Sidamon, the Hospitaller commandery of l'Espluga Calba, thereby linking it to the Hospitaller order in addition to the Templars. The town's palace-castle was remodelled in the 17th century, work that gave it much of its present appearance.
