La Sentiu de Sió
Village
La Sentiu de Sió is a municipality of the Noguera, on the banks of the Sió river, which until the mid-19th century was called Asentiu i Flix. It was the last conquest of Count Ermengol IV during the campaign of the Plana de Urgell (1076-1080); with the castle of Asentiu in their hands, the counts had a clear path to Balaguer. In 1143 Ermengol ceded the stronghold to Pedro and Arnaldo Bernat, who restored the settlement. At Tossal de les Forques are found the oldest occupation remains in the area, discovered in 1933, together with the remains of an Iberian settlement; irrigated by the Sió and the Urgell auxiliary canal, the municipality was also one of the fronts of the Battle of the Segre in 1938, and on that same hill Civil War trenches are still preserved.
