What to see and do in Anglès

Anglès
Village
Anglès is an industrial town with a textile tradition, a municipality of the Selva comarca, in the north of the comarca, on the border with the Gironès, on the right bank of the river Ter. It stands on a small rise in the middle of an extensive valley, closed to the west by the Guilleries massif, next to where the Osor stream flows into the Ter. The first written reference to the town dates from the year 860, as the valley of Anglesio; the church of Sant Amanç, documented since 1019, gave rise to the settlement, and its chapel, incorporated into a now-ruined castle, is the present parish church. It lives on dryland and irrigated farming, livestock and the textile industry. Since 1956 it has maintained the SPEDAC Sport Anglers' Society. It has 5,944 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Old Town of Anglès
Monument
Medieval settlement organised around the former castle of the viscounts of Cabrera, which dominated the crossing of the Ter from the 12th century; under the protection of the fortified precinct, craftsmen and merchants settled, linked to institutions such as the notary's office or to establishments such as the butcher's and the bakery, dependent on the lord of the castle. Outside its precinct there was a bastion where the church now stands. In the 15th century Anglès was a centre of remença resistance, which, together with the damage from several earthquakes, forced the castle to be reformed; by the 16th century the Carrer d'Avall, the Carrer Major and the castle quarter were already formed. In the 13th century the town obtained a market licence, and in the 16th century it was walled, preserving a gateway with a pointed arch.
Hermitage of Santa Bàrbara
Monument
Hermitage atop a hill above Anglès, at 864 metres above sea level, with views of the Pyrenees, the Gulf of Roses and the Selva, built in the 13th century next to a two-storey refuge house with which it forms a single complex; it owes its present appearance to an 18th-century alteration. The hermitage proper is a small chapel with a single nave of two bays and a chancel in a half-round apse, with a single-arched bell-gable whose bell bears an inscription of 1952. The first documentary reference dates from 1310, and it is known that the chapel was built in 1419. The aplec held in its honour takes place on the second Sunday of May.
Hermitage of Sant Amanç
Monument
The hermitage of Sant Amanç is a sanctuary in the Masies de Sant Amanç neighbourhood, in the municipality of Anglès (Selva), listed as architectural heritage by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The earliest mention of it dates from 1019, when it is named as Sancti Amancii Anglensis; it came to be the seat of a parish before those of Anglès and Sant Martí Sapresa, which gave rise to the surrounding hamlet of farmhouses. Worship declined from the 15th century and it was completely abandoned in the 19th. Romanesque in style and of complex plan, with a rectangular apse perpendicular to the nave, it preserves an arched door with a coat of arms on the keystone and a two-arched bell-gable. Restored between 2007 and 2014 by a residents' association, on 15 November of that year the bishop of Girona presided over a celebratory mass.
Castle of Anglès
Monument
The castle of Anglès stood on the highest stretch of the walled enclosure, dominating the valley of Anglès and the area of la Cellera, Sant Julià del Llor and Bonmatí. It dated from the 11th-12th centuries, with a second phase of occupation in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, when it was extended to cover a good part of what is now the old quarter. It is not documented until 1242, in the will of Guerau V de Cabrera, who created with the castles of Anglès and Brunyola a small estate for his son Ramon. Today only a few walls with arrow slits remain, along with the memory preserved in the urban layout, since the Plaça de la Vila, trapezoidal in shape, occupies the old parade ground; in 1991 the town council acquired the ruins' land in order to investigate and preserve them.
Burés Factory
Monument
The Fàbrica Burés is a textile colony in Anglès (la Selva), whose so-called steam-engine building is declared bien cultural de interés nacional (the highest level of heritage protection in Catalonia), while the complex of workers' housing is listed as bien cultural de interés local (heritage protection at the local level in Catalonia). The Burés family, from Manresa, promoted the construction of the factory, intended for cotton spinning and weaving and powered by the hydraulic energy of the Ter through the Canal de les Indústries; it was inaugurated on 13 November 1887. At the end of the 19th century Anglès's cotton industry employed some 800 workers, many of them outsiders housed in deplorable conditions, which led to the building, from 1891, of workers' housing, extended in 1920 with 72 more flats on either side of the road.
