What to see and do in Bescanó

Bescanó
Village
Bescanó is a municipality in the Gironès, in Girona, on the right bank of the Ter river, formed by the settlements of Bescanó, Estanyol, Montfullà and Vilanna, added to the municipal term in 1846. The territory shows settlement since the Palaeolithic, with the Roman villa of Montfullà, an Iberian settlement at Estanyol and medieval castles in Bescanó itself; its parishes were structured in the early Middle Ages over these four Roman villas. Comital rule was maintained in Montfullà and Bescanó until burghers from Girona bought up rents and founded masies (farmhouses), and in the 15th century several buildings were damaged by the earthquakes of 1427. It combines this medieval heritage, such as the castle of Bescanó, with modernist hydroelectric industry from the early 20th century, borders the Crosa volcano and today has 5,088 inhabitants.
Castle of Bescanó
Monument
A castle documented in 1276, also known as the castle of Favars, with a walled courtyard and Gothic windows; converted into a farmhouse after centuries of agricultural use.
Bescanó Hydroelectric Power Station
Monument
A hydroelectric power station of 1908 on the Ter, of modernista architecture, with decorative features and sculptures unusual in this kind of industrial installation.
La Crosa Volcano
Nature
A volcano with the widest crater on the Iberian Peninsula (about 1,250 metres in diameter), formed by a violent phreatomagmatic eruption; a protected natural area that can be toured via a circular route of about 3 km. It extends across the municipalities of Bescanó and Aiguaviva.
Bescanó Cured Meat Food Fair
Activity
A fair born in 1996 that brings together in the village's old quarter artisan producers of cured meats, cheeses, oils and wines from the Girona comarcas, with direct sales, tastings and demonstrations of traditional trades.
