What to see and do in Sant Martí de Llémena

Sant Martí de Llémena
Village
Sant Martí de Llémena is a scattered municipality in the Gironès comarca, situated in the Vall de Llémena, among mountains of volcanic origin, and formed by the former villages of Sant Martí, Llorà, Granollers de Rocacorba and Les Serres, unified in 1846. The place name comes from the Llémena stream, documented in the 11th century as Lemine, which according to Joan Coromines would derive from the pre-Roman Celtic (dalo)-lemăna, “valley of the elms”. It has about 726 inhabitants, who live from dryland and irrigated farming and livestock raising. Across its territory are scattered Romanesque chapels rebuilt in the 18th century, such as Sant Joan del Pla or Santa Cecília de les Serres, besides the medieval castle of Granollers de Rocacorba, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), and the caves of Can Buxó.
Castle of Granollers de Rocacorba
Monument
The castle of Granollers de Rocacorba, documented since 1237, was the centre of the old barony of Granollers, on the western slope of the Rocacorba mountain range, within the municipality of Sant Martí de Llémena (Gironès), near the parish church of Santa María. Converted into a farmhouse in the 18th and 19th centuries, its old keep can still be made out on the south façade.
Sant Joan del Pla
Monument
Sant Joan del Pla is a work in Sant Martí de Llémena (Gironès) included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It is a Romanesque chapel from the 12th century, with a single nave, covered by a barrel vault with a slightly pointed profile, with a round-arched apse; the main façade has arrow slits and access is through a stone door with a half-voussoired arch, with a small two-pitched roof above it. The wall-belfry, with two arches, is located on the short side of the nave, opposite the apse; in the apse two windows open, the central one double-splayed, and on the west façade there is another, completely transformed. The interior is well kept and prepared for worship, presided over by an image of Saint John the Baptist.
Sant Roc de la Barroca
Nature
The cingles de Sant Roc are a rocky ridge that forms the boundary between the municipalities of Amer, Sant Aniol de Finestres and Sant Martí de Llémena, in the Vall de Llémena. Its highest point, at 598 metres, coincides with the hermitage of Sant Roc de la Barroca, built in 1447, and included in the list of the 100 cims of the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya. Seen from above, the ridge forms a wedge pointing eastward and rises almost two hundred metres above the plain, separating the Sant Climent stream, to the south, from the Llémena stream, to the north and east, both tributaries of the Ter. From this natural viewpoint the valley is dominated, with the Banya del Boc volcano and the Rocacorba massif.
