What to see and do in Brunyola i Sant Martí Sapresa

Brunyola i Sant Martí Sapresa
Village
Brunyola i Sant Martí Sapresa is a municipality of the Selva formed by the former territories of Brunyola and Sant Martí Sapresa, which were united under the name Brunyola until it adopted its current name in 2018. It lies in the contact zone between the Guilleries and the Girona depression, on the slopes of the Santa Bàrbara hill. The village of Brunyola, capital of the municipality, stands at 257 metres above sea level around its old castle, of which three cylindrical towers and the north façade with a voussoired gateway are preserved, and which today houses the town hall; next to it, the parish of Sant Fruitós uses one of the towers as a bell tower. The economy, in a heavily wooded territory, is based on potato, maize and hazelnut crops, with its own fair since 1995.
Sant Romà
Monument
Hermitage located next to the mas Salló, on a knoll near the path linking Sant Dalmai and Sant Martí Sapresa, in the municipality of Brunyola i Sant Martí Sapresa (Selva). Documented as a suffragan of the church of Sant Amanç since 1279, it is an isolated building with a rectangular plan and a horseshoe-shaped semicircular apse in Romanesque style, to which a sacristy, a western porch and a large two-arched bell-gable topped with three pinnacles were later added. The facade, whitewashed and now in poor condition, preserves a voussoired portal and an oculus. Beneath the choir are kept ex-votos related to the former compulsory military service, in honour of its patron saint, venerated as a soldier. It is listed in the Catalan architectural heritage register under number IPAC 33459.
Castle of Brunyola
Monument
The oldest part of the castle, of which only some stretches of wall survive, dates from the 12th century; between 1399 and 1401 it was completely rebuilt and a wall with four corner towers was raised, enclosing the small church of Sant Fruitós. Damaged in the Peninsular War and the Carlist Wars, it was sold in 1834 and converted into a farmhouse; today it is the seat of Brunyola town council.
