What to see and do in Quart

Quart
Village
Quart is a municipality in the Gironès, seven kilometres from Girona, with 4,165 inhabitants. It is a benchmark for Catalan ceramics and terrissa (pottery), a craft tradition documented since the 14th century, more than 700 years ago, and linked to the quality of the local clays; for years it hosted the Fira Mercat de la Terrissa Catalana, now discontinued, and it still preserves the Quart Pottery Museum. In its municipal term, in the transition zone between the Gironès plain and the Gavarres massif, two Iberian settlements have been documented, that of la Creueta, on the Puig d'en Rovira, and that of Castellar de la Selva, where the church of Sant Martí stands; another church, that of Sant Sadurní, is found in Palol de Onyar.
Museum of la Terrissa de Quart
Monument
The Museu de la Terrissa de Quart was inaugurated on 27 March 2011, following a project begun in 2004 in three phases that rehabilitated the old bòbila (brick kiln) of Can Ginesta, renovated its porch and raised an annexe building linked by a walkway, with funding from the Generalitat, the Diputació de Girona and European funds. It thus occupies an early 20th-century brick factory, with a large kiln where up to 60,000 pieces were fired per batch, and recalls Quart's pottery tradition, documented since the 14th century and still alive in the Fira de la Terrissa held every December. It has interactive museum facilities and an exhibition showing the process of manufacturing terrissa (pottery).
Castle of Palol d'Onyar
Monument
The castle of Palol d'Onyar, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), stands on a hill in the village of Palol d'Onyar, within the district of Quart. It retains its structure as a fortified house despite the modifications it has undergone, with the church of Sant Sadurní attached. A voussoired gateway gives access to the old parade ground, which connects with the rooms of the house and the chapel; the north and west walls are battered, and the northern one retains several arrow slits. Documented since 1279, it is believed to have been completed in the 13th or 14th century; in 1350 Dalmau de Palol gave it to his daughter Sibil·la, whose family owned it throughout the 14th century. When the chapel became a parish, the lords retained the right over it, although a side door was opened towards the outside.
Santa Margarida de Quart
Monument
Santa Margarida de Quart stands atop a small hill, outside the present-day settlement of Quart, which has grown up alongside the road from Gerona to Llagostera. It has a single nave of three bays with ribbed vaults and side chapels, a chancel that is polygonal inside and semicircular outside, and a choir at the west end reached through a door dated 1729. The baroque doorway, from 1748, opens between columns and is crowned by a niche with the image of the saint and a rose window; the bell tower, of Romanesque origin and restored between 1975 and 1983, preserves two storeys of twin windows on columns with corbel-shaped capitals. The temple, documented since 1362, also holds the relics of Saint Justa and Saint Rufina, patronesses of potters.
The clay pot of Quart
Food and drink
The pottery of Quart, documented since medieval times, has supplied the Girona kitchens for centuries with casseroles, greixoneres and glazed earthenware pots, the vessel in which escudella, rostit and casserole rice dishes are cooked.
