What to see and do in Llambilles

Llambilles
Village
Llambilles is a municipality in the Gironès comarca, on the border with the Baix Empordà, watered by the Bugantó and Corb rivers; its eastern, wooded part belongs to the Gavarres massif, while the western part extends over the fertile plain of the Onyar's tributaries. It is crossed by the greenway of the old Carrilet, the narrow-gauge railway that linked Girona and Sant Feliu de Guíxols between 1892 and 1969. Already documented in the early Middle Ages as Lambiliolas, it has lived from cereal farming and cork harvesting in the massif. It preserves two Romanesque churches, Sant Martí and Sant Cristòfol, the latter much altered, and the hermitage of Santa Maria d'Erols, already documented in the 12th century. It has 737 inhabitants.
Church of Sant Cristòfol de Llambilles
Monument
The church of Sant Cristòfol de Llambilles, included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, is a rectangular building with a central nave and a semicircular apse of Romanesque origin, on which a Gothic vault was raised, today plastered and painted, with the grey stone transverse arches visible; in a side chapel the date 1699 can be read. The façade, of Baroque forms, preserves the corner ashlars, openings and the voussoirs of the door; the bell tower, of square base, transforms by means of four squinches into an octagonal tower with round-arched openings. Inside there is a baptismal font from 1587, a reliquary and a silver processional cross from the 16th century. According to tradition, the original parish would have been the hermitage of Sant Cristòfol del Bosc.
Church of Sant Martí de Llambilles
Monument
A parish church of Romanesque origin from the 12th century, heavily transformed in Gothic times and in the 18th century, which preserves arrow slits in its upper part as evidence of its defensive use.
