Castle of Palol d'Onyar Monument · Quart, Gironès, Girona The castle of Palol d'Onyar, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), stands on a hill in the village of Palol d'Onyar, within the district of Quart. It retains its structure as a fortified house despite the modifications it has undergone, with the church of Sant Sadurní attached. A voussoired gateway gives access to the old parade ground, which connects with the rooms of the house and the chapel; the north and west walls are battered, and the northern one retains several arrow slits. Documented since 1279, it is believed to have been completed in the 13th or 14th century; in 1350 Dalmau de Palol gave it to his daughter Sibil·la, whose family owned it throughout the 14th century. When the chapel became a parish, the lords retained the right over it, although a side door was opened towards the outside. Photo: Arnaugir (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Quart
