What to see and do in Cassà de la Selva

Cassà de la Selva
Village
Cassà de la Selva, in the Gironès, has historically been linked to the cork industry since the 18th century, and preserves the modernist architecture raised by the industrial families of the sector, today covered by a themed route dedicated to the cork heritage. The centre formed in the Middle Ages around the sagrera of the original Romanesque church, on the same site now occupied by the 16th-century Gothic church, inside which are remains of Roman constructions; from the 12th century there also existed a castle, the centre of feudal power, which came to be a possession of the Montcada family. The old railway station, now restored, hosts exhibitions and cultural activities, among them the Nit dels Músics Cassanencs, held on the first Friday of the festa major, in May or June.
Fair of el Tap i el Suro
Activity
The Fira del Tap i el Suro is held in Cassà de la Selva, in the Gironès, two weekends after the village's main festival, in early June. It pays tribute to the cork-stopper industry which, with origins going back to 1760, when Francesc Malavida made the first stopper, turned cork into the engine of the locality's demographic and economic expansion during the 19th century. During the fair, factory visits are organised, demonstrations of traditional cork peeling led by Eloi Madrià, wine tastings, concerts and the traditional Sopar Xic-Xec, as well as children's workshops and stalls selling handcrafted cork products.
Former Carrilet Station of Cassà de la Selva
Curiosity
The former station of the narrow-gauge railway that linked Girona with Sant Feliu de Guíxols, today the starting point of the themed cork route through the municipality's cork industrial heritage.
Cassà de la Selva Main Festival
Activity
The Cassà de la Selva town festival, with popular activities between late May and early June, falls in some years the week before Corpus Christi. On those same dates the Nit dels Músics Cassanencs is held, a musical evening that coincides every year with the town's festival.
Weekly market of Cassà de la Selva
Activity
The passeig del Vilaret hosts a food market twice a week with fruit, vegetables, cured meats and cheeses from the comarca; the Wednesday morning one is the busiest and supplies the surrounding villages.
