What to see and do in Fornells de la Selva

Fornells de la Selva
Village
Fornells de la Selva is a municipality on the Gironès plain, in a meander of the Oñar river and integrated into the Gerona urban area, 6 kilometres from which it lies. Its place name probably derives from the kilns where tiles and pottery were fired, making use of the abundant clays of the area; for centuries agriculture was its main activity, and it preserves more than fifty historic masies (farmhouses). It has the fortified Gothic church of Sant Cugat (16th century) and remains of the medieval castle, today converted into a masia. It is also known for its railway links: the old station, on the Barcelona-Portbou line, houses the headquarters of the Association of Friends of the Railway of the Gerona Comarques, with a large model railway. It has about 2,800 inhabitants.
Castle of Fornells
Monument
The Castell de Fornells, in Fornells de la Selva (Gironès), is a castle of medieval origin documented since 1049, when Counts Ramon Berenguer I and Elisabet de Nimes granted it to Hug Guillem and his successors. Its remains, raised in the 10th century, were transformed over time into a farmhouse. Next to the castle stands the chapel of Santa Maria del Castell, of Romanesque origin and today in ruins, dedicated to the Virgin Mary since 1122.
