What to see and do in Sant Julià de Ramis

Sant Julià de Ramis
Village
Sant Julià de Ramis is a municipality of 3,715 inhabitants in the Gironès comarca, situated on the left bank of the Ter river, fourteen kilometres from Girona. It is dominated by the Puig de Sant Julià, a 204-metre hill that successively housed the Poblat Ibèric, an Iron Age oppidum; the Castellum Fractum, a late Roman fort that controlled the Via Augusta; and a 19th-20th-century military fortification, begun in 1893 as a gunpowder depot and today converted into a cultural complex. In the old centre, at 184 metres, stands the sanctuary once dedicated to Sant Julià and today to the saints Cosmas and Damian, Romanesque with a Renaissance façade; the ruins of Montagut castle are also preserved. The municipality absorbed the former municipality of Medinyà in 1972.
Castellum Fractum and Iberian Settlement of Sant Julià de Ramis
Monument
The site of the Castellum Fractum and the Iberian settlement of Sant Julià de Ramis stands on the Puig de Sant Julià, at 200 metres above sea level, in the Gironès, and is declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It combines an Iberian oppidum from the 5th to the 1st century BC, with huts carved into the rock and fortified with a stretch of wall, with a late Roman castrum that made use of the Iberian structure to control, from this strategic position, the passage of the Via Augusta; remains from the late Empire, from the 4th to the 7th century, have also been found. It has been under systematic excavation since 1996 and is now being prepared for visits as part of Girona's archaeological circuit. Very close by is the church of dels Sants Metges, which also preserves Iberian and Roman remains.
Castle of Medinyà
Monument
A castle documented since 1017, when the village of Medinyà is mentioned in a bull of Pope Benedict VIII to the monastery of Banyoles; it stands in the settlement of Medinyà, in the Gironès, next to the junction of the N-II and the GI-514 road, within the municipality of Sant Julià de Ramis. Its circular keep, of medieval origin, was incorporated into a residential wing remodelled in the 18th century until it became a large manor farmhouse. Its lords were first the Dalmau family, documented on the site since 1128, and from the 14th century the Xetmar family, who inherited the estate.
