What to see and do in Canet d'Adri

Canet d'Adri
Village
Canet d'Adri, in the Gironès comarca, lies in the Vall de Llémena, dominated by the volcano of Puig d'Adri, part of the comarca's most important volcanic cluster, and by the Rocacorba massif, which at 985 metres is the highest point of the municipal term. Besides the centre of Canet, it has grouped together since 1846 the former villages of Adri, Biert, Montbó, Montcal and Rocacorba, each with its own church: that of Sant Vicenç, Romanesque, in Canet; that of Sant Joan, also Romanesque, in Montbó; or the 18th-century sanctuary of Santa María in Rocacorba. The river gorges of the Gorgues, the dolmen of Montbó and the cave of Boratuna, with the remains of an Iberian settlement, complete its natural and archaeological attractions. With 744 inhabitants, its economy combines dryland and irrigated farming with livestock raising.
Puig d'Adri Volcano
Nature
A volcano located on the southern slope of the Rocacorba mountain, between the villages of Canet d'Adri and Adri, only seven kilometres from Girona; its main attraction is the three superimposed volcanic edifices, formed in distinct eruptive phases of strombolian, phreatomagmatic and effusive type. The lava flow of the final phase reached about eleven kilometres in length. It is covered by a dense forest of cork oaks and holm oaks, with box in the undergrowth, and forms part of the Quaternary volcanism of the Volcanic Zone of la Garrotxa. With the remains of a volcanic-stone structure on its summit, at 345 metres of altitude, from where the Empordà, Girona, the Medes Islands and the castle of Montgrí can be seen on clear days, it is listed within the Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural (Catalonia's inventory of protected natural areas).
Canet d'Adri Potholes
Nature
Narrow river gorges easily accessible from the road, formed by the erosion of water on the surrounding volcanic rock. They are located next to Puig d'Adri, a volcano on the southern slope of the Rocacorba mountain whose basaltic flows extend over much of the valley. The erosive action of the Canet stream and its tributaries has carved deep gorges of alveolar morphology into this material, considered unique in the Catalan volcanic field, which is why the area is listed in the Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural (Catalonia's inventory of protected natural areas). The surroundings preserve a forest of cork oaks and holm oaks with a box undergrowth, and are home to wild boar, badgers, genets and foxes, as well as numerous birds.
Shrine of la Mare de Déu de Rocacorba
Monument
The sanctuary, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), stands at the top of the Rocacorba massif, at 929 metres, next to Puigsou, and on clear days the Cap de Creus, the Montgrí, the Medes Islands, the Gavarres, the Montseny and the Puigmal can be seen from there. It occupies the site of an old castle whose history goes back at least to 1065, when it appears documented as rocha curva in a will; throughout the Middle Ages it belonged to lineages such as the Hostoles, the Cartellà or the Rocabertí, lords of Peralada, until the castle was sold in 1342. The present sanctuary, from the 18th century, makes the site one of the most spectacular natural viewpoints in the comarques of Girona.
Dolmen of la Mota
Nature
A late Neolithic dolmen (2500-2200 BC) in the Montbó area, used for burials until the Bronze Age and the 8th century BC.
