What to see and do in Sant Gregori

Sant Gregori
Village
Sant Gregori is the first municipality of the Vall de Llémena coming from Girona, in the Gironès, with an agricultural and forested landscape dotted with ruined castles, fortified farmhouses and hermitages. Its municipal term brings together seven centres, among them Constantins, Cartellà, Sant Medir and Domeny, besides Sant Gregori itself; in 1975 the part closest to Girona was split off, giving rise to the districts of Taialà and Germans Sabat in the capital. On the summit of the Puig de Sant Grau, today a natural viewpoint, there are traces of an Iberian settlement from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. It preserves the castles of Sant Gregori and Cartellà. During the Civil War it temporarily lost its name for that of Tudela de Ter. It lives from agriculture, livestock farming and forestry, and today has 4,191 inhabitants.
Castle of Cartellà
Monument
The castle of Cartellà stands in the village of Cartellà, a settlement in the municipality of Sant Gregori (Gironès) located in the Vall del Llémena, about five kilometres from the municipal capital, crossed by the river Gàrrep and surrounded by farmhouses, fields and woods. Documented since the 12th century and extended in the 13th and 14th centuries until it became a Gothic fortress adapted to firearms in the 15th, it belonged to the Cartellà, Xetmar and Milany lineages. Together with the parish church of Sant Feliu de Cartellà, it is one of the elements of greatest cultural and architectural interest in this small settlement, which was an independent local entity until 1846, when it was joined to Sant Gregori.
Castle of Tudela i capella de Sant Grau
Monument
Remains of a fortification of the 10th-11th centuries at the top of the Puig de Sant Grau, beside the chapel of the same name documented since 1548, at a point with wide views over the Vall de Llémena.
Sant Medir de Cartellà
Monument
Church of Sant Medir, in the settlement of Cartellà (municipality of Sant Gregori, Gironès), in Romanesque style, with an original fabric from the 11th century, later rebuilt or replaced by a Lombard Romanesque one that underwent variations over the centuries. The fabric, with a single nave with an apse and barrel vault, was later completed with a second parallel nave and side chapels; it preserves the Romanesque apse and a cylindrical body of well-cut ashlar that houses a spiral staircase giving access to the square-plan bell tower, in addition to a decoration of Lombard arcading. It underwent major renovations or extensions in the 18th century and since 1980 has been home to a community of Cistercian nuns.
Sant Bartomeu de Segalars
Monument
The chapel of Sant Bartomeu de Segalars, of Romanesque origin (12th-13th centuries) and located by the Ter river in the district of Sant Gregori, is documented from 1401 —when it already had a confraternity and a beneficed chaplain— and listed as bien cultural de interés local (a Catalan local-interest cultural-heritage protection category). Worship and the benefice remained documented until 1732. It is a building with a single nave covered by a pointed barrel vault, reinforced by two transverse arches of the same profile, closed to the east by a semicircular apse with a double-splayed window. The west façade was remodelled with a new door, two windows and an added porch, and the side of the nave was reinforced with buttresses; the walls are plastered inside and rendered without ornamentation outside.
Archaeological Site of Sant Gregori
Nature
A prehistoric site with rock shelters occupied by human groups; at the Pla de la Joheria, Neanderthal remains and nearly 2,000 stone tools were found from a settlement some 300,000 years old.
