What to see and do in Beuda

Beuda
Village
Beuda is a mountain municipality in the Garrotxa, in Girona, on a slope of the Mont massif, north of Besalú, with 203 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread between the village of Beuda and those of Lligordà, Palera and Segueró. The terrain, cut through by streams, reaches 1,100 metres in the Cirera range and drops to 130 by the Fluvià river; the village sits at 338 metres. It lives from dryland farming, livestock and quarries of alabaster, granite and limestone. It preserves a notable Romanesque heritage: the church of Sant Feliu, from the 11th century, the monastery of the Santo Sepulcro de Palera, a former Benedictine priory also from the 11th century, and the churches of San Pedro de Lligordà and Santa María de Palera, from the 12th century; the one at Segueró, from the 11th century, holds a 14th-century alabaster carving of the Virgin.
Sant Sepulcre de Palera
Monument
The Benedictine priory of Sant Sepulcre, not to be confused with the nearby church of Santa Maria de Palera, was consecrated in 1085 by the Bishop of Girona Berenguer Guifré, with the attendance of the bishops of Barcelona, Carcassonne, Albi and Elne. In 1107 it came under the monastery of Santa Maria de la Grasse until the mid-16th century, and became a major centre of pilgrimage by offering indulgences comparable to those of visiting the Holy Land. The church survives, Romanesque from the 11th century, with a basilical plan of three naves and a chancel of three semicircular apses without a transept, along with some monastic buildings; of the cloister only two arches remain, along with remnants of capitals carved with birds and human figures.
Castle of Beuda
Monument
Documented since 1002 by Pope Sylvester II, with an 11th-century circular tower and a 13th-century rectangular body, it stands atop a rocky outcrop north of the village and should not be confused with the so-called Castell Nou del Pla, located in the flat area. It belonged to the counts of Besalú and, after passing through several families, was sold in 1281 by Sibil·la de Palau to King Peter the Great, who granted it to Ponç Hug IV of Empúries; it later passed to the Queixàs family. Popularly known as the castell dels moros or castell de les Bruixes, it is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and today preserves the circular tower, 5.5 metres tall, and a stretch of the northwest wall.
New Castle of Beuda del Pla
Monument
The Castell Nou de Beuda del Pla, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), was built in the 15th century near the village church by the Queixàs family, lords of the domain, enlarging an earlier building with Gothic elements; its façade still bears the family coat of arms, which is why it is also known as mas Queixàs. It replaced as the family residence the former rock castle of El Castellot, documented since the 14th century in the hands of the same family. It consists of three sections of differing heights: the main one, rectangular in plan, retains a doorway with a voussoired round arch and windows with Gothic decoration; it is completed by a three-storey keep, whose old battlements were walled up in a renovation that replaced them with a flat roof.
Castle of Falgars
Monument
Remains of a Roman tower, known as the Torre del Puig de Far or Castellot de Falgars, on the summit of Puig del Far (977 m), in the Serra del Mont, in the municipality of Beuda, near the monastery of Sant Llorenç de Sous. From this watchtower one commands views over the Empordà, the bay of Roses and the Fluvià valley. The structure, circular in plan with an interior diameter of 4.65 metres and walls almost two metres thick, was built with large, roughly worked ashlars at the base and smaller, better-cut blocks above; because of its technique, similar to that of the Neápolis of Empúries, it is believed to be Roman work, from the 2nd-1st centuries BC. Its function was linked to the control of the territory and its routes, especially the Capsacosta road and its junction with the Via Augusta.
