What to see and do in Albanyà

Albanyà
Village
Albanyà is a small village of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, situated at 239 metres above sea level at the headwaters of the Muga river, in contact with the Alta Garrotxa, with which it forms the Salines-Bassegoda consortium. Already documented in 844 as Albanianum, it grew up beside the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere d'Albanyà, founded in 820, one of the oldest in Catalonia. In 1969 it absorbed the former municipality of Bassegoda, whose chief town was Lliurona, which changed its comarca from the Garrotxa to the Alt Empordà. Its economy was based on cereals, market gardens along the Muga, livestock farming and, above all, charcoal, until the arrival of butane gas in the mid-20th century. It is the first municipality in Spain declared a Starlight Astronomical Park for the purity of its night sky.
Bassegoda Peak
Nature
A peak of 1,373.7 metres located between the municipalities of Montagut and Oix, in the Garrotxa, and Albanyà, in the Alt Empordà, in the Alta Garrotxa. Its characteristic pointed shape, its height and the fact that it stands apart from other nearby peaks make it easily recognisable from afar; from its summit, a completely rocky watchtower, there are views stretching from the Gulf of Roses to Canigou. On its north-eastern slope rises the river Borró, a tributary of the Fluvià. The place name Bassegoda may derive from Old Basque, from the words basa or baso ('wild' or 'forest') and goiti ('summit, height'). A plaque placed in 1971 by the Centre Excursionista d'Olot recalls that the writer Marià Vayreda set the opening of his novel La Punyalada here; the peak is included among the 100 cims of the FEEC.
The Muga Potholes
Nature
A series of pools and small waterfalls carved by the Muga river along its upper course, with crystal-clear water perfect for swimming, in a setting in the Alta Garrotxa.
