What to see and do in Maià de Montcal

Maià de Montcal
Village
Maià de Montcal is a small farming municipality in the Garrotxa comarca, near Besalú, crossed by the Fluvià river and broken up by the Montcal, 529 m high. It lives from dryland farming, with cereals, vines and olives, and from cattle and pig farming. Already in the year 978 a document records the donation of a house by count-bishop Miró III of Cerdanya to the monastery of Sant Pere de Besalú. It preserves the church of Sant Vicenç, from the 10th century, the sanctuary of Santa Magdalena de Maià, from the 12th century, and the castle of Dosquers, documented since 1245, in the area the municipality incorporated in 1969. Buried in its cemetery is the politician and economist Ernest Lluch, who spent long periods in the village.
Castle of Dosquers
Monument
Dosquers Castle, in the district of the same name in the municipality of Maià de Montcal (Garrotxa), preserves fragments of the walled enclosure —some up to eight metres high— and a large moat, as well as a wall with arrow slits on the northeast side; it was built on bare rock, probably in the 12th century, to control the roads toward the lands of the Empordà. The first documented record dates from 1245, when the Bishop of Girona Guillem de Cabanelles cites it in his will as Castrum nostrum de Duobus Queris; until then it had been the personal property of the bishops of Girona, who retained civil jurisdiction over the place. In the late 14th century it was renovated in response to attacks by English and French mercenaries. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection; BCIN 1011-MH).
Sant Vicenç de Maià de Montcal
Monument
Parish church of the village of Maià de Montcal (la Garrotxa), documented since the year 978 in the donation that count-bishop Miró Bonfill made to the monastery of Sant Pere de Besalú, when the temple was referred to as Sancti Vicencii in villa Maliano. The current building is, however, Romanesque, from the 12th century, with a single nave, a pointed barrel vault and a semicircular chancel; around the perimeter of the apse runs a frieze supported by five carved corbels -a man's head, an acanthus leaf, a man carrying a bundle and an angel with outspread wings, among others-. The bell tower, square in plan, was built reusing part of the original bell-gable. The church was restored in 1978, coinciding with the millennium of its first documentary mention.
Sant Martí de Dosquers
Monument
Sant Martí de Dosquers is the parish church of the village of Dosquers, in the municipality of Maià de Montcal, in la Garrotxa, documented since the 13th century -it is mentioned in 1278 in the will of the bishop of Girona Pere de Castellnou- and which belonged to the episcopal see, whose bishop exercised civil jurisdiction from the castle of the place. It is a Romanesque building with a single nave and semicircular apse, raised over time, to which chapels and a sacristy were added that altered its original structure; it preserves a notable triumphal arch between the nave and the apse, and the bell tower, originally a bell-gable, became a tower with round-arched windows. It holds an 18th-century baptismal font, dated 1766.
Coat of Arms of Can Traver
Monument
Heraldic coat of arms in relief above the main door of the Mas Llorenç de Can Traver, the main farmhouse of the Can Traver neighbourhood, in Maià de Montcal, a large rectangular manor house with broad four-sided roofs. Below the lintel inscription, DON JOAN DE TRAVER Y LLORENS 1803, the coat of arms is oval in shape with three diagonal bars crossed by a fourth perpendicular one, surrounded by the Latin motto TRINUS ET UNUS DEUS. The Traver family enlarged their old residence between the 17th and 18th centuries, taking advantage of the prosperity of the Catalan countryside at the time, joining the new building to the old one at first-floor level. It is listed as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 3941-MH, Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), and the Mas Llorenç estate as a whole as a bien cultural de interés local (a local-level heritage protection status).
