What to see and do in Sant Ferriol

Sant Ferriol
Village
Sant Ferriol is a mountain municipality in the north of the Garrotxa comarca, in the province of Girona, made up of small settlements scattered through the valleys of the Fluvià and Ser rivers and the Torn and Mor ranges, among them Ausiñá, Fares, Juïnyà, la Miana and el Torn. Until 1930 it was called Parròquia de Besalú, and the present-day municipality was formed in 1857 by the union of several entities that had until then been independent. It has 245 inhabitants. It takes its name from the sanctuary of San Ferriol, in late Gothic style from the 17th century though documented since 1495. Its territory also preserves the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Collell, from the 17th century, and several Romanesque churches, such as that of San Fructuoso, from the 12th century, and that of San Miguel de la Miana.
Castle of la Miana
Monument
La Miana castle is a building in Sant Ferriol (Garrotxa), near the church of Sant Miquel, of which today only a heap of stones remains among the vegetation. Its core is a two-storey tower covered by a vault, dated to around the 11th century, together with a walled perimeter, later extended and remodelled. It is documented from 1268, and already between 1175 and 1206 members of the la Miana lineage are mentioned in deeds of sale and donation; it had its own chapel from 1228. The last records date from the second half of the 15th century, after the Remença wars, when it was probably abandoned. Between 2006 and 2008 an archaeological project documented and consolidated its interior spaces. It is Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 1456-MH; Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
