Castle of Vilopriu Monument · Vilopriu, Baix Empordà, Girona Although the castle-palace preserved today, with its Gothic mullioned windows, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries over major late medieval alterations, excavations carried out between 1978 and 1980 brought to light walls and pottery from the 12th century, pointing to an earlier first castle; the centre of Vilopriu is documented since 1279. Of the complex there survive the south wall, a rectangular tower at the south-east corner and the east wing, today partly the seat of the town hall; on the south façade can be seen two twin Gothic mullioned windows and a doorway with an arch dated 1820. It is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Photo: Josep Maria Viñolas Esteva (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Vilopriu
