What to see and do in Sant Llorenç de la Muga

Sant Llorenç de la Muga
Village
Sant Llorenç de la Muga is a stone village of the Alt Empordà set in a bend of the upper valley of the river Muga, surrounded by mountains covered in forests of pines, holm oaks and oaks. Its walled settlement from the 14th-15th centuries is still preserved, with a triangular medieval layout of four towers and three gates. Under Charles III, in the 18th century, several forges were founded to work the iron and lead mines of the area; the most famous, the Forja Real de San Sebastián, was destroyed in 1794 by the troops of the French general Augereau during the War of the Roussillon, and its ruins now lie covered by the Boadella reservoir. It also retains the castle of San Lorenzo, from the 12th-13th centuries. It has 247 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Sant Llorenç de la Muga
Monument
Remains of a 13th-century medieval castle next to the walled quarter of the village. Documented since 1210, when Arnau de Llers bequeathed it to his son Bernat, who in 1225 sold it to King James I together with the castle of Bassegoda and the nearby mines. It later passed to the Rocabertí family and played a defensive role during the 15th-century Catalan civil war: in 1475 it was taken by Rodrigo Trayguero with French troops. Only the keep survives, square in plan and about ten metres high, with loopholes, walls of cobblestones and mortar with ashlar at the corners and an interior barrel vault, along with stretches of wall and a semicircular bastion on the north side.

Remains of the Royal Foundry of Sant Sebastià de la Muga
Curiosity
The Reial Foneria de Sant Sebastià de la Muga, dating from the 18th century, next to the chapel of the same name in the municipality of Sant Llorenç de la Muga, is considered the first cast-iron blast furnace in Catalonia. It was the initiative of Pere Grau Balló i París, who in 1766 obtained royal authorisation to work the iron mines in the area; it was built between 1768 and 1771, with labour brought from the Périgord, and began production in 1773, under the Swiss engineer Jean Maritz, producing ammunition and artillery for the army, which was taken to the citadel of Roses. During the War of the Pyrenees, in 1794, the French general Augereau occupied and destroyed it, and it never produced again; its land was sold at auction in 1835. Since the building of the Darnius-Boadella reservoir in 1969, its remains have stayed submerged and only emerge during extreme droughts.
