What to see and do in Maçanet de Cabrenys

Maçanet de Cabrenys
Village
Maçanet de Cabrenys is a town with a Pyrenean feel in the Alt Empordà comarca, at the foot of the Sierra de les Salines, between the puig de les Salines (1,331 m) and the roc de Frausa (1,445 m), watered by the Arnera, Frausa and Rinadal rivers. Already mentioned in the year 814, it was fortified in the Middle Ages and added Cabrenys to its name in 1440, on passing to the barony of the same name, of the Rocabertí lineage; it preserves remains of the wall with three 15th-century gateways, the old prison and the medieval old quarter. The church of San Martín, from the 12th-13th centuries, is late Romanesque. Surrounded by springs, among them that of Les Creus, bottled by the Vichy Catalán group, it now lives mainly from tourism, and from it routes set out toward the Salines-Bassegoda Natural Park.
Castle of Cabrera
Monument
The castle of Cabrera is a medieval fortification of the former county of Besalú, located to the northeast of the municipality of Maçanet de Cabrenys, near the boundary with la Vajol, at the eastern end of the Salines massif. Its ruins crown the roca de Cabrera, a conical granite crag 852.4 metres high that dominates the surrounding valleys and offers views over a good part of the Alt Empordà and the Alta Garrotxa. The rock is already mentioned in a document from the year 1003 as the boundary of properties of the monastery of Sant Pere de Camprodon, and the castle, first mentioned at the end of the 11th century, appears in the oath of fealty sworn to Count Bernat II of Besalú after 1070. During the 13th century it belonged to the Hortal family, later surnamed Cabrera, as vassals of the lords of the barony of Cabrenys.
Les Salines Massif
Nature
A border massif of the Pyrenees covering about 4,100 hectares, between the Alt Empordà and the Vallespir, with forests of Scots pine, fir and beech, a refuge for wild boar, foxes and birds of prey. Granitic in nature, within the Pyrenean axial zone, it reaches its highest point at Roc de Frausa, at over 1,400 metres. Vegetation varies with altitude, from holm oak and cork oak woods up to about 600 metres to beech forests above 1,100 metres, and it is home to species such as the western whip snake and the red-rumped swallow, at the eastern edge of their range. The area, with 4,875.42 hectares under protection, was declared an SCI (Site of Community Importance) in 1997 and an SPA (Special Protection Area) in 2005 within the Natura 2000 network.
Talc Mines of Darnius-Maçanet
Curiosity
Former talc workings known as the Gravat and Garravera mines, operating from the 1940s until their closure in December 1990, now abandoned industrial remnants in the mountains.
