What to see and do in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda

Santa Perpètua de Mogoda
Village
Santa Perpètua de Mogoda is an industrial municipality of the comarca of Vallès Occidental, on the plain crossed by the Riera de Caldes near its outlet into the Besòs, 17 km from Barcelona, with the termenat castle of Santiga. The municipality was formed in 1847 from the union of the former villages of Santa Maria l'Antiga and Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, both with remains of Roman villas and earlier Iberian settlement. Upon them, between the 10th and 12th centuries, arose medieval Santa Perpètua, whose core is today the Mogoda neighborhood. The Santiga neighborhood, documented since the year 983, preserves its traditional appearance, with a square, a wash house, a castle and the workers' terraced houses beside the church. In 1857 a steam-powered textile mill was set up on the outskirts, the start of its industrialization.
Castle of Santiga
Monument
The castle of Santiga, today turned into a large square-plan casal with three bays, three floors and a gallery of round arches in the attic, gives its name to the settlement of Santiga, in the district of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda. Its origins go back to the domus of Santiga documented in 1121, when Arnau Geribert d'Antiga, linked to the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès, bequeathed it to his wife Guilla. In 1389 King John I raised it to the status of a termenat castle, and over the centuries it passed through the Salbà, Vallgornera, Vallseca and Sentmenat families, whose coats of arms appear on the shield of the voussoired gateway leading to the courtyard. The quadra of Santiga was not annexed to the municipality until the 19th century. The building preserves walls of pebbles and sand and vaults on the ground floor.
Santa Perpètua de Mogoda Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda is celebrated in early September, with around fifty activities organised together with some twenty cultural and sports associations from the municipality. Its traditional elements include the village's giants, el Bernat and la Perpètua, first presented in 1988, who represent two Catalan bourgeois of the early 20th century even though their names evoke a 12th-century knight and the local patron saint; they dance their own dance, El Casament, created in 1995. They are accompanied by the small giantess Santiga, christened during the 1998 Festa Major, and the small giant Pipa, built in 2001 by members of the colla de geganters.
