Santa Maria de Martorelles
Village
Santa Maria de Martorelles, formerly Martorelles de Dalt, is a municipality in the Catalan Vallès Oriental, at 181 meters above sea level and with 868 inhabitants. On its territory, some 2,300 years ago, an Iberian settlement stood, surrounded by the wall of the Turó d'en Guillamí, in the Serralada de Marina, razed by Cato's Romans in the year 195 BC. The first document about the town, already under the name Martorelles de Dalt, dates from the year 992; around 1005 the village formed around the parish church, within the territory of the castle of Castellruf, documented since 1060, whose consecration took place in 1105. Of the castle, now in ruins, the menhir of Castellruf is preserved nearby, on Joan Matons square. The municipality became independent from Martorelles de Baix in 1927.
Church of Santa Maria de Martorelles
Monument
Parish church that gives its name to the municipality of Santa Maria de Martorelles (Vallès Oriental), already documented in 1005 within the castle of Castellruf. In 1105 Bishop Berenguer Bernat consecrated the parish church, and in 1161 Bishop Guillem de Torroja transferred the parish to the canonry of Barcelona. Of the original 11th-century structure, the semicircular apse survives, with three horseshoe-arch windows, covered by a quarter-sphere vault restored in 1383; studies suggest the original church may have had three apses arranged in a cross. The building, now Baroque in style, incorporated the chapels of Sant Llorenç (1569), Mare de Déu del Roser (1584) and Sant Isidre (1587) in the 16th and 17th centuries. It has been listed as a bien cultural de interés local (a local-level heritage protection designation) since 1993.
