Martorelles
Village
Martorelles is a small industrial municipality in the south of the Vallès Oriental, in the province of Barcelona, on the banks of the Besòs river, with 4,992 inhabitants. The first document mentioning the village, the deed of consecration of its church, dates from the year 1015. The origin of its name is disputed: it has been linked to the abundance of martens in the area, and also to the Vulgar Latin martyretula, small cemeteries, in reference to the Iberian necropolises and the megalithic dolmen preserved in the municipality; the most widely accepted theory, however, links it to the murtra or myrtle, a shrub very common in the comarca that has appeared at the centre of the municipal coat of arms since at least 1838, except during the Francoist dictatorship.
