What to see and do in Montcada i Reixac

Montcada i Reixac
Village
Montcada i Reixac is a municipality in the comarca of Vallès Occidental, in the province of Barcelona, situated at the confluence of the rivers Besòs and Ripoll, directly bordering Barcelona, of whose first metropolitan ring it forms part. It has 37,460 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its traditional economy, based on vineyards, wheat and strawberries, gave way from 1917 to intense industrialisation thanks to its position on the railway, with facilities such as the Cementos Asland factory or Ford-Motor Ibérica; today it is a communications hub with three railway lines and the metro since 2003. The municipality is dominated by the 11th-century castell termenat of Montcada, the centre of a barony sold to Barcelona in 1390, whose coat of arms, eight gold bezants, recalls the Moncada family.
Castle of Montcada
Monument
A medieval castle overlooking the confluence of the Besòs and the Ripoll, on the hill of Montcada (Vallès Occidental). Documented since 1023, it was linked from its origins to the Montcada family, among whose members were the notable Baron Ramon de Montcada, at the court of Count Ramon Borrell, and Guillem Ramon II de Montcada, the Seneschal. Philip V ordered its demolition, which was not completed until 1917, when it still retained a solid round tower; the same demolition destroyed the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Montcada, built on the same site. Today scarcely any remains survive.
Montcada i Reixac Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Montcada i Reixac is celebrated in spring (at the beginning of June or the end of May depending on the year), and the municipality also keeps the feast of the Mare de Déu de la Mercè on 24 September.
Asland cement factory
Historical milestone
The Asland cement works established itself here in 1917, making use of the limestone of the hill and the railway junction. It marked the start of the municipality's industrialisation, followed by machine shops and factories that transformed a district until then agricultural.
Casa de les Aigües
Historical milestone
Station for extracting and pumping the sub-riverbed waters of the Besòs built in 1878 to a design by Antoni Rovira i Trias to supply Barcelona. It operated until 1987 and preserves wells, steam machinery, chimney and the engineman's dwelling over 4,320 square metres.
