What to see and do in Matadepera

Matadepera
Village
Matadepera is a municipality in Vallès Occidental, in the province of Barcelona, at the foot of Sant Llorenç del Munt, whose highest point, La Mola, at 1,104 m, is crowned by the Benedictine monastery of the same name. More than half of its territory lies within the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park. The earliest references date from 959, when the «place of Matadepera» is mentioned; in 1014 Counts Ramon Borrell and Ermesenda of Carcassonne endowed the monastery with their allodial land. The original settlement, scattered in farmhouses around the church of Sant Joan, gave way in the mid-18th century to a new village beside the riera de les Arenes. Today it is a residential town of 9,776 inhabitants.
Monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt
Monument
The monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt stands at the top of la Mola, within the natural park that bears its name, in the municipality of Matadepera (Vallès Occidental); it is listed as Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and bears a strong resemblance to the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès, whose monks founded it. The first churches on the site are documented in the year 947, and in 1014 it was established as an independent Benedictine monastery, with a period of great activity under Abbot Odeguer, who consecrated the new church in 1064. Subjected to Sant Cugat in 1098, it fell into decline from the 16th century until its final abandonment in 1804. Restored since the late 19th century, it is still today the subject of conservation work.

Food and drink
The holm oak and pine woods of the natural park give rovellons, fredolics and llenegues, the basis of autumn cooking in the towns around it. They are prepared over embers, with botifarra or in stews, and they are a usual product on the menus of the restaurants of Matadepera.
