What to see and do in Sant Quirze del Vallès

Sant Quirze del Vallès
Village
Sant Quirze del Vallès is a municipality of Vallès Occidental, near Sabadell, Terrassa and Barcelona, at 188 meters above sea level and crossed by the Galliners ridge, which divides its population center in two. Archaeological remains found within its territory show occupation of around 6,000 years, since the Neolithic. The parish of Sant Quirze is first documented in 1013, when it depended on the castle of Terrassa; the municipality separated from Sant Pere de Terrassa in 1848 and, after passing through names such as Sant Quirze de Galliners or San Quirico de Tarrasa, adopted its current name in 1976. Its economy, traditionally agricultural and centered on vine cultivation on farmsteads such as Can Feliu or Can Vinyals, was transformed in the 20th century by industry and the railway.
Church of Sant Quirze del Vallès
Monument
Parish church that gives its name to the municipality of Sant Quirze del Vallès, in the Vallès Occidental, whose parish is already documented in 1013. For this church the Gothic altarpiece of Sant Quirze i Santa Julita was commissioned, begun by Bernat Martorell and completed around 1456 by Pere Garcia de Benavarri; the work remained in the church until it was moved, and today it is kept in the Museu Diocesà de Barcelona.
Sant Quirze del Vallès Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Sant Quirze del Vallès is always celebrated on the first weekend of September, with four days of shows, music and popular culture. Among its leading figures are the village's giants, Quirze and Julita, who represent the local patron saints: a Roman Christian mother and son martyred during the persecutions of the emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century. The pair of giants, created in 1984 by local geganters, was christened during the 1985 Festa Major with the sponsorship of the giants of Sabadell and Mataró, and has since gone out to dance at celebrations alongside small giants and big-heads.
