What to see and do in Vacarisses

Vacarisses
Village
Vacarisses is a municipality of the comarca of Vallès Occidental, in the province of Barcelona, on the border with Bages and Baix Llobregat, which contributes most of its territory to the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park. It has 7,729 inhabitants (INE 2025), which increase on weekends and in summer. It occupies a small depression of rugged relief, with an average altitude of 385 meters, on the western foothills of the Prelitoral mountain range. Its name, related to “vaca” (cow), gives a canting charge to its coat of arms, with a cow on a silver field, approved in 1984. The municipality is organized around the old center and numerous housing developments. It celebrates its minor festival on 26 May, for Saint Philip Neri, and its main festival on the first weekend of August.
Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park
Nature
The Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac brings together the massif of Sant Llorenç del Munt and the Serra de l'Obac, between the comarques of Bages, Vallès Occidental and Moianès, and extends across twelve municipalities, including Vacarisses. Its main peaks are the Montcau, at 1,056.7 metres, and la Mola, at 1,101.9 metres, where the Romanesque monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt stands next to former lime kilns. Managed by the Diputació de Barcelona, it was declared a natural park in 1987 and enlarged in 1998 to its current 13,694 hectares, following a first zoning plan in 1972 and a special plan in 1982 that curbed urban growth in its surroundings. In August 2003 a fire seriously damaged its northeastern part.
Caves and Potholes of Sant Llorenç del Munt
Nature
The caves and potholes of Sant Llorenç del Munt form a karst system with more than three hundred documented cavities, one of the most important in central Catalonia. Among them stand out the Cova del Frare and the Cova Simanya, where ceramic fragments and other remains have been found from the early and late Neolithic, the Chalcolithic, the Bronze Age, the Iberian period and the Middle Ages. Very close to the second cave, at the coll d'Eres, four cist graves were found, identified as Visigothic thanks to a bronze fibula found inside.
