What to see and do in Calldetenes

Calldetenes
Village
Calldetenes is a municipality in the Osona comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located in the centre of the Plana de Vic, a short distance from the comarcal capital, with which it borders. Its origin lies in the settlement of Sant Martí de Riudeperes, documented since the year 949, while the settlement of Calldetenes is recorded from the mid-14th century and grew in importance until becoming the seat of the municipality, which was officially called San Martín de Riudeperas until the 1960s. It has 2,733 inhabitants and its economy combines dry farming, livestock raising and the food industry. The municipality's coat of arms recalls, with three pears, the Riudeperes family, former lords of the house of Riudeperes. The village preserves the Renaissance manor house of Alta-riba.
Manor House of Alta-riba
Monument
The casal d'Alta-riba is a fortified house in Calldetenes (Osona) declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries over medieval defences of which it retains walls and arrow slits. It has a ground floor and three storeys under a two-sided roof, with a square-sectioned tower at the north-west corner. In the north wall opens a voussoired doorway with a coat of arms above the central voussoirs, and on the south façade, facing midday, another flat-arched doorway beneath three balconies with a second coat of arms. It is built of rendered rubble masonry imitating ashlar. To the east adjoins the masoveria (tenant farmhouse), rectangular in plan, and at the north-west corner of the wall surrounding the complex stands a single-nave chapel without an apse. It is in good condition.
