What to see and do in Sant Julià de Vilatorta

Sant Julià de Vilatorta
Village
Sant Julià de Vilatorta is a municipality in Osona, in the province of Barcelona, which also includes the town of Vilalleons, with 3323 inhabitants. It preserves the manor house of Bellpuig and Sant Llorenç Castle. Its parish church, of Romanesque origin, is documented from the year 910, and in the early twentieth century the village became a summer resort, with numerous Modernista-style second homes, including the Colegio del Rosario. In Vilalleons the Romanesque church of Santa María is preserved, with Gothic altarpieces, and in the municipal territory also stands the seventeenth-century baroque sanctuary of Puiglagulla. In an Eocene paleontological site in the municipality, a new species of echinoderm, Calzadaster friasi, was described in 2004.
Manor House of Bellpuig
Monument
The Casal de Bellpuig, also called Castell dels Moros or Domus de Sant Julià, is a fortified house documented since 1147 in the municipality of Sant Julià de Vilatorta, on a small hill above the Noguera stream. Large twelfth-century walls survive, about four metres thick, with the springing of a ten-metre barrel vault, arrow slits and a rectangular tower at the northwest end; the plan was adapted to the terrain, with a moat cut into the rock that separated it from the rest of the hill. In 1234 the lords were Bertran and Berenguera; in 1316 it passed to Elisenda de Centelles and, in 1327, to her son Eimerich. The village gradually took the castle's name, until in the fifteenth century King John II ceded the place to Llorenç d'Altarriba, after which news of the stronghold is lost.
Castle of Sant Llorenç
Monument
Of the castle of Sant Llorenç, in the municipality of Sant Julià de Vilatorta, there remain fortification remains built into a monastery and the base of a square tower at the top of the mountain; the complex is declared a cultural asset of national interest. Documented since the year 884, it was first a castell termenat, and at the start of the eleventh century it was supplanted in its functions by the castle of Meda, becoming then a residence of Augustinian canons: on the same site was founded the Benedictine monastery of Sant Llorenç, begun in the eleventh century and completed in the second quarter of the twelfth, which reused walls and defensive structures of the castle. The complex was rebuilt in the twentieth century on the original remains, which are preserved underground.
