What to see and do in Arenys de Munt

Arenys de Munt
Village
Arenys de Munt is an inland municipality of the Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, with several historic masies, located 4 kilometres from Arenys de Mar and 45 from Barcelona. It has 8,654 inhabitants over 21.3 square kilometres. The first mention of the parish of Sant Martí d'Arenys dates from the year 878, and in 998 the place name Arenys appears for the first time, referring to the sandbanks of the stream; until 1813 the Tries family, later replaced by the Jalpí family, served as mayors by grace of the Viscount of Cabrera. In 1575 the inhabitants of the maritime district obtained their own church, and in 1599 an independent municipal council, giving rise to Arenys de Mar. Traditional farming of strawberries, cherry trees and vines was replaced in the 19th century by a textile industry specialising in towels.
Can Maiol de la Torre
Monument
Fortified farmhouse of the 16th and 17th centuries, also documented as Can Pasqual de la Torre, in the municipality of Arenys de Munt. It was built, like other farmhouses in the comarca, to withstand the danger of Turkish raids and the growing banditry of the time. It has a notable defence tower of square plan with a battered base, with an attached wing of ground floor and upper storey with a voussoired entrance topped by a moulded window. The tower rises one storey higher than the rest of the building and preserves a wooden ceiling inside; its windows are framed with fine mouldings. It gives its name to the lane and the district where it stands.
Ca l'Amar de la Torre
Monument
Ca l'Amar de la Torre is a fortified farmhouse in the municipality of Arenys de Munt, in the Maresme, set in a rural environment surrounded by farmland. It comprises three sections and three storeys, ground floor, first floor and attic, with a square defence tower on the left side that rises one storey above the rest and is topped with battlements; above the tower's lintelled entrance door there is a stone shield bearing the family's emblem, a tower. The entrance to the house is voussoired, of granite, and the other openings are lintelled. Towers like this one were built to withstand the Turkish danger and the growing banditry, and Ca l'Amar is today one of the few defence towers remaining in the town. A window above the round-arched doorway bears the date 1632.
Can Bellsolell de la Torre
Monument
Can Bellsolell de la Torre is a house whose origin is documented from the 10th century, next to the centre of Arenys de Munt, with the present building dating essentially from the 16th century: a main round-arched voussoired doorway from the 14th century and late Gothic windows, one of them a twin window with busts carved on the imposts. The tower, square and battlemented —with the date 1652 carved on the lintel of a window and the crowning restored in the late 19th century—, houses on the ground floor a chapel with a Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, which served as the parish of Arenys de Munt during the Third Carlist War. The house preserves the Bellsolell family archive, with the memoirs of five generations of heirs between 1666 and 1838.
