What to see and do in Caldes d'Estrac

Caldes d'Estrac
Village
Caldes d'Estrac is a small spa town in the Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, known for its thermal waters and for the Casa Ugalde, with 3,356 inhabitants. The name comes from a thermal spring around which, together with an old hospital and a church, the village grew from the 13th century onward. Between 1870 and 1920 it experienced its heyday as a summer destination for the Catalan bourgeoisie, and writers such as Jacint Verdaguer, Joan Maragall and Apel·les Mestres walked its streets. At the top of the village stands the Vila Vella, with masies such as Can Milans de Caldes, with Gothic elements and fortified, and Can Gilí, from the 16th century; nearby rise the Torre Verda and the Torre Busquets, two 16th-century defence towers declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of cultural heritage protection in Catalonia).
The Green Tower
Monument
A cylindrical 16th-century defence tower located in the vila vella (old town) of Caldes d'Estrac, in the Maresme region, declared a cultural asset of national interest. Built of stone and lime mortar, it has a window facing the stream (riera) and is topped with stepped merlons; its name comes from the ivy that covers it. Together with the Torre Busquets it marked the boundary of the old town core, and together with the Torre dels Encantats in Arenys de Mar it formed part of the coastal defence against piracy. It is the oldest tower in the municipality: the first record dates from 1549, when the batlle (bailiff) of l'Estrac asked the Consellers of Barcelona for permission to set up a tavern and a bakery to fund its repair.
Busquets Tower
Monument
The Torre Busquets is a monument in Caldes d'Estrac (Maresme, Barcelona) declared a cultural asset of national interest. Together with the Torre Verda it marks the boundary of the Vila Vella (old town) core, and together with the Torre dels Encantats in Arenys de Mar it formed part of the coastal defence against piracy. It is a cylindrical tower with a ground floor and two upper storeys, typical of the 16th century, built of stone and lime mortar, with access via a stone bridge leading to a postern protected by an arrow slit. It is joined by a cantilevered bridge to the 17th-century farmhouse of Can Busquets, and surrounded by a landscaped park with stepped terraces. The first record dates from 25 February 1586, when the Council of Barcelona authorised Joan Busquets to build a round tower to defend against the Moors.
Casa Ugalde
Monument
The house, declared a cultural asset of national interest, was designed in 1951 by José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat in collaboration with Manuel Valls Verges, and built between 1951 and 1952 commissioned by Eustaquio Ugalde. It is a detached single-family dwelling of two storeys, at number 16 Carrer Torrenova, with sea views and conceived to visually frame the landscape from its various rooms, respecting the existing vegetation. It was built with stone walls, reinforced concrete floor slabs, ceramic flooring and lime rendering. Together with the Casa Rozes, in Rosas, it is one of the most significant works by Coderch and of modern Catalan architecture of the post-war period.
