Sant Vicenç de Montalt
Village
Sant Vicenç de Montalt, called Sant Vicenç de Llavaneres until 1935, is a coastal municipality in the Maresme comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located between Sant Andreu de Llavaneres and Caldes d'Estrac, with Montalt, the hill that gives it its name, as the highest point of the municipal territory. Its parish already existed before 1174, although in 1230 it came under the parish of Sant Andreu; together with Mataró and Sant Andreu, it formed part of the possessions of Mata castle, until in 1543 it obtained the privilege of becoming a municipality in its own right. It now has 6,802 inhabitants and its economy is based on tourism and industry, with golf courses along the coast.
Church of Sant Vicenç de Montalt
Monument
Gothic church of Sant Vicenç de Montalt, in the Maresme, included in Catalonia's Inventory of Architectural Heritage. It replaced an earlier church, previously dedicated to Caldes or to Llavaneres, when the parish became independent in the late 16th century: work began in 1591, under master builder Dionís Torres de Calella, in a late Gothic style still common at the time. It has a single nave, with a square bell tower, and retains defensive elements on the facade, with the corbels of the machicolation that once protected the portal; the portal, from 1598, is Renaissance, the work of Pierre Balquer. Its altarpieces, both Renaissance and Baroque, including one by Agustí Pujol from 1616-1618, burned along with other art objects in 1936; in 1886 a Chapel of the Sacrament was added.
