What to see and do in la Pobla de Lillet

La Pobla de Lillet
Village
La Pobla de Lillet is a town at the head of the river Llobregat, in the north of the Berguedà and on the border with the Ripollès, with 1105 inhabitants (INE 2025); it preserves the monastery of Santa Maria de Lillet and its walled precinct. The village is divided into several neighbourhoods: la Vila, the most central, concentrates the services and is crossed by the B-402 road; la Plana, next to the railway line of a tourist train that provides access to the town; les Coromines, one of the largest, with the hermitage of Sant Antoni; and el Firal and la Mola complete the settlement. It borders Castellar de Nuch to the north, Gombreny to the east and Guardiola de Berga to the west.
Castle of Lillet
Monument
The castle of la Pobla de Lillet is the surviving part of the fortification that the lords of Mataplana built in 1293, on the hill where the rivers Llobregat, Aritja and Regatell meet, within the broad and fertile valley of Lillet. Ramon II d'Urtx, lord of Mataplana, and his son Hug de Mataplana granted a founding charter to la Pobla de Lillet on 15 April 1297, and the fortress was built beside it to defend the whole barony and shelter its inhabitants from possible invaders. The building containing the entrance gate was altered in its southern half in the 18th century, when the church of Santa Maria de Lillet was enlarged, while the northern half was restored in 2007. It currently operates as tourist accommodation with a spa area.
Castle of la Pobla de Lillet i recinte emmurallat
Monument
Castle built in 1293 by the Mataplana family on an island in the river Llobregat, head of the barony that gave rise to la Pobla de Lillet, a settlement that received a charter of liberties in 1297 to encourage its settlement. Of the original building, of irregular plan and with Romanesque elements such as arches of elongated voussoirs and decorated lintels, the old rectory survives, raised over its remains after a fire and partly demolished between 1716 and 1719 to build the church of Santa Maria de Lillet; today it operates, restored, as rural accommodation. The walls of the enclosure are not visible, either buried or incorporated into the houses of the village. It is protected as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Monastery of Santa Maria de Lillet
Monument
The monastery of Santa Maria de Lillet is a former monastic community situated in la Pobla de Lillet (Berguedà), first mentioned in documents of 819, although its church was not consecrated until 833. It enjoyed the support of the bishopric of Urgell and the donations of the lords of the castle of Lillet. In 1356 a new church was built closer to the village, which meant that the faithful stopped attending the monastery; it ended up secularised in 1592, although its church kept parish status until the 19th century. The present church, Romanesque and single-naved with a Latin-cross plan, was built in the 12th century and restored in the 14th -whence the Gothic doorway comes- and again in the 18th, when plaster additions changed its appearance.

In 1905, while working for Güell on the Catllaràs chalet, Antoni Gaudí designed for the Artigas family some gardens beside the source of the Llobregat, with bridges, grottoes and pergolas of undressed stone.
