What to see and do in Toses

Toses
Village
Toses (officially Toses in Catalan, also cited as Tosas) is a high-mountain municipality of the Ripollès, in the province of Girona, located at the headwaters of the Rigard river valley, next to the pass of the same name which, at 1800 metres, connects the Ripollès with the Cerdanya. Besides the capital, it includes the villages of Dòrria, Fornells de la Muntanya and Nevà. Its territory, between the Pyrenean axial range and the sierras linking the Moixeró with the Montgrony, reaches 2547 metres at the Puig de Dòrria; the village stands at 1444 metres. It has 198 inhabitants (INE 2025) and preserves a pre-Romanesque church.
Castle of Toses
Monument
The Castell de Toses stands on the hill called Castellassos, above the town of Toses (Ripollès, Girona), at 1,529 metres of altitude, at the top of the Toses pass. Today barely any remains survive: a small elliptical rise measuring 8 by 20 metres, bordered on the north side by the line of what was a moat 2 metres wide and 20 metres long. The first documentary record of the castle dates from 1284, when King James II of Majorca granted it in fief to Blanca d'Urtx and her son; it later passed to the Mataplana family, and in the 16th century the barony of Pinós and Mataplana was joined to the dukes of Alba. It is classified as bien cultural de interés nacional (BCIN 1689-MH; Catalonia's highest level of cultural heritage protection).
Sant Cristòfol de Toses
Monument
Sant Cristòfol de Toses is a Romanesque church located on the outskirts of the village, at the top of a set of terraces overlooking the whole valley. It has a single-nave plan with a semicircular apse and two chapels that give it the shape of a Latin cross, covered with a pointed barrel vault; the right-hand chapel is housed beneath a two-storey bell tower. The place is documented in the year 839 as part of the county of Cerdanya, and the first reliable records date from 1035; the architectural elements are dated to around the 11th century and the apse to around the 12th. Its original mural paintings, together with other pieces from the apse and the baldachin, were transferred to the National Art Museum of Catalonia in 1952; more recently, some fragments have been discovered and restored, and are preserved in situ.
Dòrria
Monument
Dòrria is a population centre in the municipality of Toses, in the Ripollès, situated at 1,550 metres altitude above the Puigcerdà road, on the southern slope of the sierra de Gorrablanca, overlooking the valley of the Rigart; it is one of the highest villages in Catalonia and the highest one still inhabited today. Documented as Duaria in the year 839 and as Doriga in 903, its origin may be Ibero-Basque according to Joan Coromines, although other authors link it to the Basque iturria, 'the spring', owing to the abundance of water in the area. It was formerly a livestock-farming settlement, heavily depopulated and revitalised in recent years by the building of second homes, organised around the parish church of Sant Víctor, consecrated in 903 by bishop Nantigís of La Seu d'Urgell and much altered in the 17th and 18th centuries, which preserves Romanesque paintings discovered during a restoration carried out from 1997 to 1999. The complex is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
The trans-Pyrenean railway through the Toses pass
Historical milestone
The Ripoll to Puigcerdà line, with the helicoidal tunnels that negotiate the pass, completed the international rail link inaugurated in 1929; it was the first electrified track on the Spanish network.
