What to see and do in Bagà

Bagà
Village
Bagà is a medieval walled town (vila closa) in the Berguedà, in the province of Barcelona, founded in the thirteenth century by the barons of Pinós, with an urban layout of which the old town survives: a large square, a church transitional between Romanesque and Gothic, and the Palau castle, currently under restoration, along with the town walls. It has 2,161 inhabitants (INE 2025) and lies in the valley of the Bastareny river, a tributary of the Llobregat, 20 km from Berga and next to the Cadí tunnel. After the decline of the textile industry and the closure of the coal mines, it lives mainly on tourism, helped by its proximity to the Cadí-Moixeró natural park and ski resorts such as La Molina and Masella.
El Palau (Bagà Castle)
Monument
El Palau, also called Castell de Bagà, was built in the 13th century as the residence of the barons of Pinós and the administrative centre of their domains, at the heart of the medieval vila closa of Bagà (Berguedà). French troops burned it down during the Revolta dels Segadors, in 1640, and it suffered further damage in the War of the Spanish Succession; in the 18th century the baron of Ur rebuilt it. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), the Town Council acquired it in 1990 and it today houses the tourist office and the Centre Medieval i dels Càtars, with rooms that preserve mural paintings from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Walls of Bagà
Monument
Medieval walled enclosure of the old town of Bagà, in the Berguedà, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Its layout is preserved, along with the Portella tower, remains of the Portalet tower and the Vilella tower, several stretches of wall in Muralla and Portalet streets, and two arrow slits in the houses of Muralla street. It is an austere work of undressed ashlar laid in courses and bound with mortar, built on a slope beside the river Bastareny. The founding charter was granted in 1233 by Pere Galceran de Pinós, and the fortification is documented as early as 1289 and again in 1335; by the 19th century only remains of the walls were left.
Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park
Nature
The Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park is one of the most extensive protected natural areas in Catalonia, spread across the provinces of Barcelona, Girona and Lleida, in the comarques of the Berguedà, the Alt Urgell and the Cerdanya, with the sierra del Cadí as the backdrop to the north of the Berguedà. This sierra, of limestone rock and rugged relief, forms part of the Pre-Pyrenees and has a particularly striking north face. Within the park rises the Pedraforca, a mountain of distinctive silhouette and one of the symbols of Catalan hiking. It is a high-mountain area: altitudes range from 900 metres in the valleys to 2648 metres at the Vulturó, its highest peak.
Bagà Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Bagà is celebrated at the end of July and beginning of August (27 July to 4 August in 2025) in honour of Sant Esteve, with a solemn mass and veneration of his relic, a procession of giants and clay pigeon shooting.
Potatoes of Bagà
Curiosity
Name given in Bagà (Berguedà) to the trinxat of cabbage and potatoes, a typical mountain dish prepared in a similar way in several Pyrenean comarques. "Trumfo" is the local word for potato, from which this dish of Bagà's cuisine takes its name.
The barony of Pinós and the new town of Bagà
Historical milestone
The barons of Pinós ordered in the thirteenth century a regular layout of streets and an arcaded square for their capital, beside the seigneurial palace. From there Bagà controlled the passes towards the Cerdanya and the mountain trade.
Escudella of hulled corn
Food and drink
Christmas dish of the Alt Berguedà: the hulled maize is cooked for hours with pork ribs, ear and trotter until it becomes creamy. The grain is prepared with a prior treatment that gives it the texture of a pulse.
