What to see and do in Sant Julià de Cerdanyola

Sant Julià de Cerdanyola
Village
Sant Julià de Cerdanyola is a small rural municipality of 234 inhabitants (2025) at 954 metres above sea level, in a valley in the north of the Berguedà surrounded by mountains, among them the Catllarás range, which reaches 1,732 m at La Clusa, the highest point of the district. More than 60% of its area is covered by forest, with black pine, beech woods, oak woods and holm oaks, although Scots pine predominates. Its parish is cited in 839 in the consecration deed of la Seu d'Urgell, and the place in 983 in an endowment to the monastery of Sant Llorenç prop Bagà. The place name Cerdanyola derives from “cerdà”, flat, and means “small plain”. On 28 June 1993 it regained its municipal independence, after the 1942 merger with Guardiola de Berguedà.
Church of Sant Julià de Cerdanyola
Monument
The church of Sant Julià de Cerdanyola, which gives its name to the municipality, stands in the centre of the village of the same name, in the Alt Berguedà, surrounded by an irregular square with rural mountain houses. It is listed as immovable heritage of the Generalitat de Catalunya. It is a building with a single rectangular nave under a gabled roof, with a massive, almost square bell tower topped with volutes, and shows bare stone throughout its exterior. It was the property of the neighbouring monastery of Sant Llorenç prop Bagà and was consecrated in 1106 by Bishop Ot of la Seu d'Urgell. It suffered attacks by the men of the Barony of Pinós, who had to pay the rector a thousand sous for burning the church and destroying its property. The temple was radically transformed in the 18th century.
