What to see and do in Guardiola de Berguedà

Guardiola de Berguedà
Village
Guardiola de Berguedà is a municipality of the Berguedà, at the confluence of the rivers Bastareny and Llobregat, which acts as a gateway to the Cadí-Moixeró natural park and includes the settlement of les Cases Noves del Collet. It has 1020 inhabitants (INE 2025); after its coal mine closed in 1991, farming activity is limited to cereals and potatoes. It preserves the monastery of Sant Llorenç, documented since the year 898, and several Romanesque churches within its district, such as Sant Andreu de Gréixer, already mentioned in 871, or Sant Climent de Vallcebre, next to a 15th-century Gothic fortress. The local festival is held in August, and in September and October the mushroom fair takes place.
Castle of Guardiola
Monument
The castle of Guardiola, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), dominated from its hill the entrance to the upper basin of the Llobregat and the Saldes, at a strategic point between the former counties of Cerdanya and Berga. A watchtower may already have existed there in the 9th-10th centuries; the place is documented as «rocha de Guardiola» in the year 939. From the 10th century it depended on the monastery of Sant Llorenç prop Bagà, which Agnès de Guardiola gave up in 1281 as its castellan. In the 14th century it was the subject of disputes between King Alfonso IV, the monastery and the Pinós family; Peter IV solemnly incorporated it into the Crown in 1346. In 1364 it was sold to the University of Berga and, the following year, the monastery's share passed to the baron of Pinós.
Castle of Brocà
Monument
No located remains survive of the castle of Brocà, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection): it is thought it may have stood on the site of the farmhouse known as El Castell, above the present-day parish of Brocà, or on the hill that overlooks the village, in the municipality of Guardiola de Berguedà. It belonged to the barony of Pinós and is documented since the year 1257.
Tower of Foix
Monument
The Torre de Foix, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), is a Gothic construction with two distinct parts: a rectangular tower, with a ground floor and three storeys covered by a single-pitch roof, and a rectangular farmhouse, originally joined by a wooden bridge. Both were merged in the 17th century into a classic farmhouse with a two-pitched roof; the tower retains original openings, with arrow slits, round-headed windows and a lintelled doorway. Documented since 1408, it belonged to the monastery of Sant Llorenç de Bagà, which sold it in 1457 to Joan de Foix. After the Foix Descatllar and the Solanell de Foix families, it returned in 1829 to the Foix de Bagà, who sold it in 1920 to the mining company Carbones de Berga, which worked open-cast coal there until the 20th century.
