What to see and do in Castellar de n'Hug

Castellar de n'Hug
Village
Castellar de n'Hug is a mountain municipality of the Berguedà where the river Llobregat rises. At the site of Clot del Moro stands the old Asland cement factory, set up in 1901 by Eusebi Güell, the first industrial cement factory in Catalonia, in operation until 1975 and today turned into a museum, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest in 2005. It has 166 inhabitants (INE 2025) and also preserves the Romanesque churches of Santa Maria, with a 12th-century bell tower, and of Sant Vicenç de Rus, consecrated in 1106. On the last Sunday of August an international sheepdog trial is held, and on 29 September, the Sant Miquel local festival.
Castle of Castellar
Monument
The castle of Castellar de n'Hug is a frontier castle that gives its name to the municipality (Berguedà), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection); together with its street it forms the original core of the settlement. Documented since the year 938, with mentions as early as the 10th century, its founding charter dates from 1292; in 1326 Arnau de Saga is recorded as its lord, and during the 17th century it was the residence of the Duke of Alba. Only a few remains of walls survive, today used as a shed, of rectangular plan and exposed, undressed ashlar laid in courses and bound with mortar; traces of former openings, now blocked up, can be seen. The building has been considerably altered and is today used as an occasional dwelling.
Former Asland Cement Factory at Clot del Moro
Monument
Former Portland cement factory of the Clot del Moro, in Castellar de n'Hug, and the first industrial cement factory in Catalonia. It was promoted in 1901 by the industrialist Eusebi Güell i Bacigalupi; it was built between 1901 and 1904, after 60,000 m³ of rock had to be removed for lack of transport infrastructure, and it was inaugurated on 25 July 1904. The building, by the architect Isidoro Pedraza de la Pascua advised by Rafael Guastavino, is an example of Catalan modernisme using the volta catalana technique with flat brick (maó pla), and it installed the first rotary kilns in the Spanish state. Active until 1975, it has since 1992 been a museum attached to the Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya, with galleries devoted to clinker, kilns and historic machinery.
